How do I configure my email program (Outlook, Entourage, Mail, etc.)?
Configuring an email client (that's the technically correct name for a program like Outlook) takes a little bit of time, but once it is setup, you get the best computing experience, so this is a great thing to do.
Which email client/protocol should I use?
This is a tough one to answer over the web because the answer is somewhat long and complicated. However, we have some general recommendations.
Windows recommendations:
Faculty and staff using Windows should use Outlook in Exchange MAPI mode
Students using Windows should use Outlook with the IMAP protocol if they have Microsoft Office. But if not, use Outlook Express on Windows XP or Mail on Windows Vista
Macintosh recommendations:
Faculty, staff and students using Macintosh should use Entourage with the IMAP protocol. If students don't have Microsoft Office, they should use Mac Mail.
If you have further questions, you really should talk to someone who is in IT. You may want to discuss it with someone you know or can also call the Help Desk at 863-HELP for advice.

Note about wireless: If you want to use an email client while on the Brown wireless network, we recommend you use a secure wireless connection named Brown-Secure. There is a little bit of setup that needs to be done in advance on both Macs and Windows. Here is the documentation on connecting to Brown-Secure.
Note about off campus connections: If you are off campus and want to configure or run and email client, you will need to have a piece of software called VPN installed and running prior to connecting. The VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and from a computing standpoint, it gives you an IP address that makes it seem like you are on campus. Get it now Windows :: Mac |
