How do I use the wireless network?
The short answer
All modern, wireless-equipped computers have a utility that allows you to select the network that you want to connect to from a list of available wireless networks. If you want to get online quickly to surf the web, choose the network named "Brown" and authenticate with your username and password.
The long answer
The network named "Brown" is unencrypted. It will allow you to surf the web and you can even check your email using a web browser. However, most other network traffic is blocked, so you may find the network difficult to use if you are trying to do things like instant messaging, using keyed software or emailing from an email client, such as Windows Mail, Outlook, Mac Mail, or Entourage.
On the other hand, our secure, encrypted wireless network has most ports open, so you can send email from an email client, use keyed software, or use any other service - the only exception is IPTV, which does not work over wireless.
Our secure, encrypted wireless network is named "Brown-Secure". In order to use the Brown-Secure network, you will need to setup your computer, but once you set it up, you're good to go. For more information, check out our in-depth wireless documentation.
