Lock It Up
» Get a Cable, "Laptop LoJack" and a Good Password

Why you should care:

Because you could lose your new computer, your school work, or some very personal information that could result in identity theft.

What you can do:

  • Keep your laptop in sight or under cover
Visit the Computer Store's site and purchase a good cable and lock. If you own a PC, you may want to purchase "The CyberAngel" software, a laptop security and tracking software that deters laptop theft and assists in the recovery of stolen computers. The Brown Computer Store is making CyberAngel available for students at a discounted price.

The Department of Public Safety reports an increasing number of laptop thefts on campus. They offer some safety tips as well as you should review.
  • Use a good, strong password to protect its contents
You can find a list of password guidelines in the Computing Password Policy and a simple tip in the SecureIT! newsletter for using your password to lock out intruders.
