The 28th annual juried Student Exhibition is sponsored by the Bell Gallery and the Department of Visual Art. The exhibition is open to all Brown students. It provides students with the valuable experience of showing their work within a professional setting, while at the same time providing the Brown and Providence communities an opportunity to view works by talented young artists. Artists in this year’s exhibition are Dara Bayer, Megan Billman, Anne Blazejack, Cody L. Campanie, Cheih Chin Chiang, Jesse Cohn, Thomas Dahlberg, Sara D’Apolito Dworkin, Lauren Engel, Sarah Faux, Hilary Fischer-Groban, Elizabeth Fisher, Jay Gidwitz, Brooke Hair, Melissa Henry, Henry G. Lee, Katrina Lencek-Inagaki, David Lloyd, Kelly Ma, Alice Malone, Mary MacGill, Sarah Meiklejohn, Rachel Moranis, Sophia Narrett, Stephen Neidich, Rebecca Nelson, Alice Nystrom, Erica Palmiter, Kim Perley, Alex Rosenbaum, Victoria Roth, Malika Rubin-Davis, David Watson Sobel, Lydia Stein, John Szymanski, Jessica Taylor, Miho Tomimasu, Mark Tumiski, Paul Wallace, Christina Wang, Aaron Weinstein, and Hannah Wohl. Murray McMillan and Anne Tait served as jurors. Both teach at Roger Williams University in Bristol. McMillan received his MFA in transmedia from the University of Texas at Austin and works in collaboration with his wife Megan. They have exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the National Museum of Art in La Paz, Bolivia, The Grand Central Art Center in Los Angeles, White Flag Projects in St. Louis, and the 2007 Istanbul Biennial in Turkey. Anne Tait received a MFA in painting from American University. She is currently artist-in-residence at the Keeper’s House, Grace Church Cemetery, Providence. Her recent exhibitions include Memto Vitae: Life in the Cemetery, Grace Church Cemetery, Providence; Tondi, Wheeler Gallery, Providence; and Black and White, Holland Tunnel, Brooklyn, N.Y. She has also shown at the Minneapolis College of Art and Exhibition; RISD Museum; and the Chautauqua Institute.

Students in the visual art department founded the show last year, to showcase artists rejected from the juried Student Exhibition. The show includes pieces in a variety of media, including drawing, painting, and sculpture. The show initiates a dialogue about the subjectivity of judging; it includes many artists featured and honored in the previous years of the Student Exhibition. Artists included in the Reject Show 2008 are: Galen Broderick, Claire Cushman, Ana Fox-Hodess, Allison Glaser, Tihtina Zenebe Gebre, Catherine Goldberg, David Hernandez, Jessica Kerry, Geddes Levenson, Whitney Mostafiz, Yifan Luo, Pook Panyarachun, Brice Peterson, Miranda Elliot Rader, Lucia Ray, Leslie Roos, Jill Silverberg, Timothy Simonds, Caitlyn Thompson, and Alex Toyoshima.
