Performance

Energy and Environmental Performance - Reducing the Amount of Energy and Water We Consume:
Much of the world relies on burning fossil fuels - oil, gas and coal - to meet its energy needs. Fossil fuels are a limited, non-renewable natural resource. Additionally, growing scientific evidence demonstrates that emissions from burning fossil fuels contribute to global climate change. These fossil fuel emissions are commonly referred to as greenhouse gases (GHG). With this in mind, Brown University’s Energy and Environment Program has a dual purpose: to minimize our use of fossil fuels and to reduce GHG emissions related to our activities.

Measurement:
When measuring our efforts to reduce energy consumption, we track:

  • Fossil Fuel Combustion
    • Central Heat Plant High Temperature Hot Water (HTHW) for facility heating and other heat loads
    • Central Heat Plant Electricity Generation (Cogeneration)
    • Independent Boilers
  • Purchased Electricity

840,521 Million British Thermal Units (BTU) or 73,000 Million Metric Tons Caron Dioxide Equivalents (MTCDE) ~ 9 MTCDE/Student
