Docent Volunteer Program
The Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology looks for new volunteers every
year to teach in the Education Program - an experiential program that interprets
various world cultures to school children of all ages. The volunteer teachers
(docents) help the Museum's staff teach more than 7,000 area students who
visit the museum each year. They lead students through hands-on programs
about Native Americans of Southern New England, the Arctic, and the Plains
as well as other areas.
Docent Training Program
The museum is offers free anthropology training classes to people who can
donate at least one morning a week for the academic year to the education
program. For eight weeks beginning in September, docents will learn exercises
and read and take part in discussions designed to teach basic anthropological
skills and concepts. Following these classes, volunteers will attend review
sessions and partner with experienced docents to familiarize themselves
with the program content and various activities involved. Volunteers are
also needed in other areas of the museum, including help with mailings and
publicity, and will also be eligible for free anthropology classes.
