José de Arriaga, Extirpación de la idolatría del Pirú. Lima, 1621.

Arriaga, a Jesuit, wrote this brief manual to help priests detect the survival of pre-Christian Indian religion, a fruit of his own experience in organized campaigns to “extirpate idolatry” in the Peruvian countryside. He recommended a combination of violence and persuasion to convince Indian communities to surrender their sacred objects and the mummies of their ancestors, urging priests to burn them and disperse the ashes so that there would be nothing left to worship. In spite of its brutality, the book is a rich trove of Andean ethnography.
