Diego González Holguín, Vocabulario de la lengua general de todo el Peru. Lima, 1608.

The indigenous language most widely represented in Peruvian books is Quechua, the language of the Inca empire. After the Spanish conquest, Peru’s Church authorities chose it as the main vehicle by which the Church would communicate with Indian Christians, so that the Quechua language became even more wide-spread than it had been before. The Quechua dictionary compiled by the Jesuit Diego González Holguín, almost 80 years after the Spanish conquest, was not the first but was perhaps the best and most influential. Quechua, today, is one of the most widely-spoken Native American languages.
