Description:
The Cercle des Philadelphes, a French scientific, agricultural, and manufacturing society, was established in Cap-Français, and held its first public meeting in 1784. The colonies could be a breeding ground for yellow fever, epizootic diseases, and various other afflictions caused by heat and pests. The John Carter Brown Library holds many works on tropical medicine, demonstrating the significance of Saint- Domingue as a fertile ground for medical study.
