Description:
Julien Raimond, a mulatto planter with large land holdings and much power in the Assemblée générale in Saint-Domingue, has undergone a revision of character in the 20th and 21st century. Many scholars seek to make him a champion of abolitionism and a supporter of the rights of slaves as full citizens of the French colonies. Some other scholars feel, however, that he is a more complex figure than this. His writings show ambivalence between his mixed heritage, and his wealth and his duty as a member of the Convention nationale. He seemed to have come down on the side of a more slow and rational emancipation. Whatever one may make of his modern reputation, one must mention his writings in any short list of important works on Haiti and the Haitian revolution.
