Fine Antique Map Reproductions

Newfoundland, 1671

Newfoundland was probably the earliest part of the American continent known to the English, and its offshore fisheries were exploited even before the time of Columbus and Cabot. Nevertheless, on this map the outline of the island is strikingly inaccurate. It is interesting to note that the chief area of English fishing interest is over-emphasized in scale. The source of the name “Cambalu” on the Labrador coast is a mystery, but it may have been a corruption of one of the many names associated with northeast North America on sixteenth-century European maps. Accompanied by an explanatory note.
