King Philip’s War

An early example of attempts by English cartographers to free themselves from their dependence on Dutch maps, the original of this map by Morden and Berry is quite rare. Only two other copies have been located. The cartouche pictures American Indian activities, and the placenames indicate an association with the events of King Philip’s War, a conflict that began with the destruction of Swansea, Massachusetts, by the Wampanoags and their allies under their leader, King Philip.

17 1/2 x 20 1/4". $27.00.
