Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay, 1651

The influential Ferrar family, particularly Mistress Virginia, whose name appears on this map, was actively interested in establishment of the silk industry and in the exploration of the interior of Virginia. The inscription on the map optimistically asserts that the Pacific coast is only a ten-day march from the head of the James River.
