M–035; Tobago, West Indies, 1682

Tobago, West Indies, 1682

John Seller’s map of Tobago is connected with the colonial efforts sponsored by James, Duke of Courland (now part of Latvia). The Courlanders had established a colony on the island in 1640 which was regularly harassed by the Dutch and, finally, all but wiped out by the French in 1677. By 1681 efforts were underway to re-establish a foothold, but the project was not a success.
