Fine Antique Map Reproductions

With the exception of the Straits of Magellan, no maps based on English information existed for South American areas. Since Spanish and Portuguese maps mostly remained in manuscript in the seventeenth century, the English had to rely on maps made for the use of the Dutch West India Company. The examples below (M–042 to M–044) derive their content from maps prepared by Hessel Gerritsz in 1625 to illustrate a book by Johannes de Laet, the Company historian.
