The descriptive notes on the face of this map by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli report on the expeditions of Rene Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle and of Louis Joliet and Father Jacques Marquette. Following La Salle’s erroneous information, the mapmaker has placed the mouth of the Mississippi too far to the west in the Gulf of Mexico.
