Joliet’s Exploration of the Mississippi, ca. 1674
This remarkable manuscript map clearly illustrates Joliet’s conclusion that the Mississippi flowed steadily southward between the Spanish possessions in Florida and Mexico and emptied into the Gulf of Mexico. The manuscript also illustrates the explorer’s belief that the river system would provide a direct link with the Pacific Ocean.
