| Publications by Fellows Fellows at the John Carter Brown Library spend their fellowship using a distinguished collection of primary and secondary sources at the Library. They produce an astonishing array of articles and books from their research. The Library published compilations in print in 1991, 1995, 1998, and 2001. The fourth edition was about four times the size of the first. Beginning in 2003 the Library began maintaining the Publication by Fellows bibliography in this electronic format. The Publications by Fellows PDF document here is current up to November 2011. The sheer quantity of a scholar's output counts for a lot in the academic world, but for real recognition and advancement, quality remains the supreme criterion. To make a name, one must publish exemplary work in a field, whether the discipline is history, anthropology, or one of the national literatures. Although we indiscriminately list here what we have been given, what sets this gathering apart is that the quality of the works cited is uniformly high. The writing represented is, after all, the product of people who have been selected in a tough competition to be JCB fellows. The list is compiled from the information given to us by former fellows. Adelina Azevedo Axelrod, Copy Catalogue Coordinator, takes this data - submitted in eight or ten different languages - and inputs and styles it to give the presentation a semblance of consistency.
