Review: Providence Phoenix

Playwright Charles Mee has exploded the boundaries in this physically dynamic, visually jarring theatrical event that has at its roots the relationships and ever shifting landscape that make up bobrauschenbergamerica!

Bobrauschenbergamerica is about relationships: interpersonal relations, the relationships between thought and action, how materials interrelate, past to present, people and place. We are carried back and forth from one point of instability to the next

--a "theatrical collage" juxtaposing elements and evoking a dynamic perception of the whole. Charles Mee has created, a world of constant change, turmoil, joy and humor. It is sudden-gripping. The moments are fleeting and resonate long after the immediate images are gone.

Many viewers of Robert Rauschenberg's art pieces reacted with considerable discomfort. His use of collage and inclusion of real elements such as bricks, socks, stuffed goats, pillows and coca cola bottles disturbed the "normal" context of paintings; people were bothered by the materials he used and how they were put together.

Here playwright Mee creates a piece of physical theater capturing the spirit of disruption inherent in the work of visual artist Rauschenberg. As a Director, I have been inspired by Rauschenberg's insistence on breaking the space of the canvas and challenged to stage a visceral event which breaks out of the existing theatrical conventions.
