The Greeks is a boldly theatrical adaptation of the plays by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides that deal with the fall of Troy and its disastrous aftermath for the victorious Greek general, Agamemnon, and his family. War, murders, rape, revenge, and incest leave their mark; both the gods and humanity are severely tested in a story that has become a heart-piece of Western mythology.

Kenneth Cavender and John Barton adapted the Trojan and Mycenaean plays of the three great playwrights of ancient Greece in 10 dramas presented over 3 evenings by the Royal Shakespeare Company of England in 1981, the middle three plays were named: The Murders. This is a condensed and collaged version, focused on the events that ravaged Agamemnon's tragic family and the questions posed by these events that have resonated ever since.

Director John Emigh has been teaching and directing at Brown since 1967. He holds MFA and PhD degrees from Tulane University in New Orleans and has directed over 65 plays: 50 of them at this University. In 1974-75, he studied topeng masked dance/theatre with I Nyoman Kakul in Bali, Indonesia and has since performed variants of this improvised form in theatres, festivals, grade schools, universities, conservatories, old age homes, international conferences, and ritual gatherings around the world. He is the author of Masked Performance: The Play of Self and Other in Ritual and Theatre, was founding chairperson of the Association for Asian Performance, chaired the Theatre, Speech and Dance Dept. for 6 years, and, last year, directed Performance Studies international's eleventh annual conference , “Becoming Uncomfortable,” hosted by Brown.
