Accidents are happening in rural Dublin, Missouri - a small town defined by its cheese factory, fundamentalist church, and community theatre. When local cheese baron Walt Bates dies in a mysterious hunting accident, his shrewd bookkeeper, Ruth Hoch, suspects murder. Alone in her suspicions, Ruth’s investigation unites the town in denial of the truth and in persecution of the accuser. As her persistence ignites suspicion and hearsay, Ruth’s quest for truth soon emulates her starring role at the local theatre as the legendary “Saint Joan of Arc.” As she tells her husband, "It hasn't changed. In six hundred years! They were just hiding behind dogma and power and they still do."

In Book of Days, which has won the Best Play Award from the American Theater Critics Association, Lanford Wilson's poetic language paints a character-filled landscape. By turns both sympathetic and scathing, it is the tale of a small mid-western town desperately cleft to idealistic visions of days gone by. Directed by guest director Peter Sampieri, Book of Days is timely in this age of terrorism and war and reflects America’s desire to believe that “this doesn’t happen in our little town.”

(Sock and Buskin, or "S&B" is the student/faculty board that selects and produces the Brown Theatre main-stage season. Students have an active and essential role in selecting the shows are faculty or guest directed and produced in the Stuart and Leeds Theatres at the Dill Center for Performing Arts. This unique institution provides for a dynamic season as well as an exceptional education.)
