Subject Authority Changes: Cataloging Service Bulletin Lists
Abstract: The Library of Congress Cataloging Service Bulletin contains cumulated
lists of subject headings that have been updated on the Library of Congress Weekly lists during
the preceding quarter. The list includes both the Cancelled heading and the Replacement heading.
In order to maintain the consistency of our cataloging with national standards and to prevent
split files in our local database, it is important that we identify and process any updates that
need to be made to our local database. These procedures present the steps for identifying and
updating, in Josiah, those cancelled/replacement subject authority records, together with the
associated bibliographic headings, that have been announced in the Library of Congress Cataloging
Service Bulletins.

Purpose: to prevent the development of split files of valid and invalid authority
and bibliographic subject headings in the data base by identifying and replacing outdated
authority and bibliographic headings with the updated valid forms.
- Search Josiah for the Cancelled and Replacement headings found in the CSB list;
mark your searching results on the CSB list.
- Marking definitions:

- If both the Cancelled Heading and the Replacement Heading are Not Present in Josiah
(both are marked 0):
SKIP the heading and go on to the next heading on the list

- If the Cancelled heading is Not Present in Josiah (marked 0) and the new Replacement heading
is Present in Josiah as a valid heading (marked /), check Josiah to be sure that we have the new
Authority Record for the Replacement heading, as well as bibliographic records using this heading.

If the Authority Record for the new Replacement heading is not already present in
Josiah, import the Authority record for the Replacement heading from the LC Authority File.
- If the Cancelled Heading is Present in Josiah as a valid heading (marked /) but it
has become a Split Heading --represented by two or more new Replacement Headings.
Print out the results of your Josiah search and mark this as a Split Heading problem

have been made to the record, i.e. 040 $dRPB, 590, 995, etc. Print out the authority record if it
has local alterations or additions. If there are no local changes, Delete the old Authority Record
for the Cancelled heading.

Coordinator.
- Go to the first bibliographic record containing the Cancelled heading. Verify headings using
CONTROL-H.

Related Subject headings also need to be replaced with new Authority Records which reflect the
new subject structure.
- Search Josiah for the Cancelled Heading.
- Select the Josiah list of See Related Subjects.
