Description

MARC field 086 contains government document classification numbers for state, national, and international documents. MARC field 086 is indexed and searchable in Josiah. It is in Innovative field group g; index code for field 086 is also g. The Brown University Library uses the 086 field for United States federal government documents and United Nations documents.

If MARC field 086 is present on cataloging copy, accept it.

If there is a document number indicated on the Serials/Docs routing flag, input the data in a MARC field 086.   See   Data input

If there is no document number indicated on the Serials/Docs routing flag

• check the cataloging record for the presence of 086 data in a 500 note field; copy and paste the data in a 086 field     See   Data input

  United Nations document           500 "E/CONF.86/3"

  Note that document sales numbers are not to be confused with 086 data such as: 

  500     "United Nations publication. Sales No. E.94.XIII.11"--T.p. verso

  If you have a question regarding the number, check with a staff member who works regularly with Documents.

  Alternatively, to verify a:

  1. Superintendent of Documents number, go to the Auto-Graphics GPO Catalog "Number Search" page   Government Documents catalog service of Autographics.   Under options, choose number search, select "GPO SUDOC number" from the options in the "Number Type" box, and enter a SuDoc number in the search box (be careful of proper spacing).

     In addition, background information about the Superintendent of Documents Classification System is available at the site of the Federal Depository Library Program.

  2. United Nations document number, go to the UNBISnet search page at the Dag Hammarskjöld Library web site:   click on bibliographic search by UN number; select the "UN Document Symbol/Sales Number" search, and enter a number in the search box.
     In addition, the United Nations documentation: research guide provides background information about United Nations document symbols and sales numbers.

• Check the publication (usually on back of front cover, title page, or back cover) for a Superintendent of Documents classification number or a U.N. document number and input the data.

If there is a document number indicated on the Serials/Docs routing flag, input the data in a MARC field 086.

If there is no document number indicated on the Serials/Docs routing flag, check the publication (back of front cover or title page) for a Superintendent of Government classification number and input the data.  See also document  Physical materials processing flags

  There is no ending mark of punctuation; undocs is in lower case.
