The following policy was implemented Sept. 2001.
We will no longer write call numbers on:

- Newly received general collections non-print (except accompanying material which remains in the back of a book). Be sure to indicate ownership on item ("Brown Univ.")
- Hard cover "ser. cat." books
- General collection periodicals going to the commercial bindery
We will continue to write call numbers on:
- General collections oversized material (hard cover and paperback)
- Newly received paperback books regardless of size
- All books in non-Roman alphabets
- Accompanying material which remains in the back of a book
- Paperback "ser. cat." books
- Special collections materials
- Materials which already have call numbers in them (e.g., recataloged and reclassified items)
- All scores
It is no longer necessary to write initials in items.
