Harris Classification: Pt. 3. Reference classes

Table of contents

Introduction to Reference Classes

The Reference Classes in Harris generally have a somewhat wider scope than do similar classes in the Library of Congress Classification. They contain general literary bibliographies, dictionaries, and encyclopedias; library, booksellers', and other catalogs; histories of literature, publishing, and private presses; and works on the theater, motion pictures, and television. Most source materials on music are classed in Harris Reference. Note that Reference classes are a useful "catch-all" for such works as source books, programs of a general nature, and miscellanea--items which are difficult to class elsewhere.

Harris Reference classes do not contain bibliographies of individual authors, such as are placed in classes Z8001-8999 at LC; in Harris these are classed with the main group of the author's works (see The Harris Dated Classes). However, bibliographies and other reference works on non-Harris authors are classed in Harris Reference (Ref.).

Summing up: a general rule of thumb for classing in Harris is: When in doubt where to class an item, and the item does not contain any form of literary text, such as poetry, drama, or even fiction, place it in the appropriate Reference class.

The classes are: Ref.; fRef.; and Lat.Amer.Ref. (always followed by a period in current practice). At one time there was a class Coll Ref., which was intended to be used for material shelved in the Reading Room. Shelflist cards for works in class Coll Ref were stamped HARRIS COLL REF., as distinct from class Ref., where the stamp was HARRIS COLL. This location has been discontinued: the two shelflists have been merged, and no attempt is currently being made to separate out the Reading Room material. The computer location for the combined shelflist is HAR, with location stamp HAY HARRIS--the same as the rest of the Harris classes, other than non-book materials and specific titles that are rare and/or small.

Class all categories described in this section using either the Old or the New Classification Procedure. For description of the procedures, see section, The Harris Dated Classes.

A. Ref

Class in Ref. most reference material as defined above. In this and the following classes, usually class by main entry, unless it makes more sense to class some other way (see examples below).

Examples:
Ref. MI274s

Miles, William. Songs, odes, glees, and ballads: a bibliography of American presidential campign songsters

Ref. UN7273fo 1964
Library of Congress. Music Division. Folk music: a catalog

1-SIZE Ref. MO756b
Morrow, Bradford. A bibliography of the Black Sparrow Press, 1966-1978

Ref. MA6995m
More theatre: stage to screen to television

However, consider the following:
1901 P876 zH49
Henault, Marie. The Merrill checklist of Ezra Pound

As a bibliography of an author, this is classed with the author, not in Ref.

B. fRef

Class fRef. is used for reference material on French-speaking Canada. Remember to class French-Canadian or Latin-American items in fRef. or Lat. Amer. Ref. respectively. (Be aware that some French-Canadian material has been wrongly classed in Ref.).

Example:
fRef. BE718d

Bernier, Silvie. Du texte à l'image : le livre illustré au Québec

For another example of class fRef., see the section, The Harris Foreign Language Classes.

C. Lat.Amer.Ref.

The very small class Lat.Amer.Ref. contains works on the literatures and music of Latin America. Note that there is no space between Lat. and Amer. or between Amer. and Ref. There is always a space between the last part of the class number and the following Cutter.

Example:
Lat.Amer.Ref. GR5958v

Grismer, Raymond Leonard. Vida y obras de autores mexicanos

For other examples of class Lat.Amer.Ref., see section, The Harris Foreign Language Classes.
