Most materials received in Cataloging Units ride without any processing flag. The following flags accompany materials, which need special processing or receive a high cataloging priority:
RUSH FLAG:
Rush materials need to be physically identified to expedite processing. A red rush flag is inserted at the point of receipt of the materials. On the flag there may be a name of the person requesting this item or
a course reserve number. There is also a date indicating when the rush request went into effect. Materials with a rush flag are separated out and placed on the priority shelf in the Catalog Department. Turn-around time for rush items is less than one wo
rking day.
PRIORITY FLAG:
This pink flag indicates that there is a priority request for the cataloging of the materials. There is a name of the person requesting a particular item and a date when the request was received. Turn-arou
nd time for items with this flag is 3 to 5 days.
ROCK RECENT:
This dark blue flag identifies items that are designated for the collection of recently published belle-lettres and other types of material of general interest (e.g. guidebooks, biographies, etc.). These items a
re expected to get priority cataloging.
SPECIAL COLLECTIONS:
Special Collections materials, including Harris collection, have a white flag on acid-free paper with a place to indicate the date of processing and the collection for which the item has been acquired. T
he white flag has a list of the collections for which materials are most frequently received. The collection for which the item is designated is circled. If the collection is not on the list, its name is written in the space for 'other.' This flag helps
to organize materials sent to the cataloging backlog since the backlog is organized by collection and then by date received.
BRIEF BIB:
all materials, which have brief bibliographic in-process records in Josiah, receive a lavender Brief Bib flag. These are titles that do not have OCLC copy available for export at the time of ordering. The flag ind
icates the date when the brief bib was created. It helps to identify the item in the backlog when a rush request for cataloging is received.
SERIALS/DOCS & SERIALS ANALYTIC:
Titles that are received through Serials/Documents have one of two flags:
- a blue Serials/Docs flag, or
- an orange Serials Analytic flag.
Both flags indicate the date of processing, the destination, call number, and, when appropriate, the series title. They also include a place for staff to circle whether the piece was acquired by gift, purchase or exchange, and a place to record data for
the 086 MARC field, when appropriate. Unlike other materials, these titles receive a brief bibliographic record in Josiah at the time of receipt in cataloging.
