Graduate Program Review for Education
10 April 1996

The Library's collections for Education consist of about 21,300 titles, of which some 130 are currently received serials. This is essentially the material that is found in the Library of Congress L classes. Of course, since the Master of Arts in Teaching involves significant study in other subject fields, the program is also supported by other parts of the collection.

Expenditures for the past three years have been:

Library Support 1992/93 1993/94 1994/95
Firm Orders $3,959 $8,059 $3,460
Approvals 10,028 8,000 11,500
Serials 7,181 9,897 11,048
Total Support $21,168 $25,956 $26,008

The Department of Education offers the M.A. Teaching degree in Secondary Education. Though the curriculum includes specialized courses in teaching theory or psychology of teaching, the program is fundamentally interdisciplinary in nature. Students concentrate in specific subject areas, such as social studies, biology/general sciences, and English. Many of their course requirements are satisfied by taking classes in these subject areas in other departments, in addition to courses which focus on educational history, diversity, philosophy, sociology and psychology.

Because the program takes such a broad approach, the University Library collections in the social sciences, humanities, sciences, and behavioral sciences, appears to meet its needs. Indeed, the Chairperson of the Education Department commented that the collection is 'strongly' appropriate in fulfilling the requirements of students. He also said that the Rockefeller Library's investments in ERIC CD-ROM indexes and ERIC microfiche (1990-) have been very helpful and appreciated. His only concern, similar to those voiced by other departments, is about the limited amount of money available for new journal subscriptions.

In short, the University Library seems to adequately support the educational and research needs of the MAT program in Education.
