introduction:

The Brown University Library receives more than 20,000 current serials (ncluding newspapers and annuals), with 8,500 e-journals. The hard copies are shelved by call number within the Brown University Library system. In order to locate a particular periodical, it is necessary to have the call number. The Reference and Serials Departments in Rockefeller and Sciences can assist you in locating periodicals, or you can submit a arrow image to a linkreference question online.

catalogs and finding aids:

Periodicals and other serials owned by the Brown University Library are listed inarrow image to a linkJosiah, the online catalog. Search for periodicals byarrow image to a link Title. If necessary, use the "Limit the Search" option to refine the search to "Format of Material: Serial/Journal". also the Library's guide to arrow image to a linkFinding Periodical Articles, or use the arrow image to a linkJosiah Help system information on "How do I find....Periodicals, Newspapers, and other serials".

shelving arrangement:

current issues:

In the Rockefeller Library, current periodicals are located in the Periodicals Reading Room on the first floor. At the Sciences Library, they are located on Level 3. All periodicals are shelved by call number. In addition, some recent issues of popular periodicals are located on Level A, near the library service desk. There are also periodicals at the Orwig Music Library and the John Hay Library.

older issues:

At the end of each year, most periodicals are bound and then shelved in the stacks according to call number. Many popular periodicals are also received on microfiche, which are filed in Hecker Center at the Rockefeller Library or Level 3 in the Sciences Library. Bound, unbound, and microfiche copies of a periodical all use the same call number. There are also bound periodicals at the Orwig Music Library and the John Hay Library

oversize volumes:

Oversize volumes are usually shelved in separate sequences from "regular" size volumes. These oversize volumes are denoted by 1-SIZE, 2-SIZE, or 3-SIZE above the call number. For example, a call number such as 1-SIZE HD62.A109 indicates that the title is a single-oversize volume. At the Rockefeller Library, single-oversize, double-oversize, and triple-oversize volumes are shelved in separate sequences after the "regular"-sized volumes. Consult the arrow image to a linkstack guide to the Rockefeller stacks next to the elevator on each floor to determine where oversize volumes are shelved on a particular level. At the Sciences Library, the single-oversize volumes are interfiled with "regular" size volumes, while the double and triple oversize volumes are shelved in a separate sequence; consult the arrow image to a linkstack guide to the Sciences Library.

newspapers:

Brown currently subscribes to more than 70 U.S. and foreign newspapers. These are located in the Periodicals Reading Room at the Rockefeller Library. Weekday editions of the arrow image to a linkProvidence Journal, the arrow image to a linkBoston Globe, and the arrow image to a linkNew York Times are also received at the Sciences Library.
