The Brown University Library receives more than 20,000 current
serials (ncluding newspapers and annuals), with 8,500 e-journals.
The hard copies are shelved by call number within the Brown University
Library system. In order to locate a particular periodical, it
is necessary to have the call number. The Reference and Serials
Departments in Rockefeller and Sciences can assist you in locating
periodicals, or you can submit a reference
question online.
catalogs and finding aids:
Periodicals and other serials owned by the Brown University
Library are listed in Josiah,
the online catalog. Search for periodicals by
Title. If necessary, use the "Limit the Search"
option to refine the search to "Format of Material: Serial/Journal".
also the Library's guide to Finding
Periodical Articles, or use the Josiah
Help system information on "How do I find....Periodicals,
Newspapers, and other serials".
shelving arrangement:
current issues:
In the Rockefeller Library, current periodicals
are located in the Periodicals Reading Room on the first floor. At the
Sciences Library, they are located on Level 3. All periodicals
are shelved by call number. In addition, some recent issues of popular periodicals are located on Level A,
near the library service desk. There are also periodicals at the Orwig
Music Library and the John Hay Library.
older issues:
At the end of each year, most periodicals
are bound and then shelved in the stacks according to call number.
Many popular periodicals are also received on microfiche, which
are filed in Hecker Center at the Rockefeller Library or Level
3 in the Sciences Library. Bound, unbound, and microfiche copies
of a periodical all use the same call number. There are also bound
periodicals at the Orwig Music Library and the John Hay Library
oversize volumes:
Oversize volumes are usually shelved in separate sequences from
"regular" size volumes. These oversize volumes are denoted by
1-SIZE, 2-SIZE, or 3-SIZE above the call
number. For example, a call number such as 1-SIZE HD62.A109
indicates that the title is a single-oversize volume. At the Rockefeller
Library, single-oversize, double-oversize, and triple-oversize
volumes are shelved in separate sequences after the "regular"-sized
volumes. Consult the stack
guide to the Rockefeller stacks next to the elevator on each
floor to determine where oversize volumes are shelved on a particular
level. At the Sciences Library, the single-oversize volumes are
interfiled with "regular" size volumes, while the double and triple
oversize volumes are shelved in a separate sequence; consult the
stack
guide to the Sciences Library.
Brown currently subscribes to more than 70 U.S. and foreign newspapers.
These are located in the Periodicals Reading Room at the Rockefeller
Library. Weekday editions of the Providence
Journal, the Boston
Globe, and the New
York Times are also received at the Sciences Library. Many newspapers
are retained permanently on microfilm and are shelved in the Periodicals
Reading Room in the Rockefeller Library. Information on the location
and holdings of newspapers can be obtained from Josiah.
In addition, the newspapers Wall
Street Journal (1889-1985), New
York Times (1851-1985) and the
New
York Times (June 1980-), and the
Providence
Journal (1995-) are available online.
Current and bound volumes of periodicals do
not circulate at the Rockefeller, Orwig, or John Hay libraries.
In the Sciences Library certain call number groups of bound volumes
circulate. These classifications, with their respective loan periods,
are as follows:
| Call No. |

| G-GB |

Copy machines are located in the Copy Center
on Level 2 and in the Periodicals reading Room at the Rockefeller
Library. At the Sciences Library, copy machines are located next
to the Library Service Desk on Level A, as well as on Levels 5, 10, and 12. Copying is also available in
the Orwig and John Hay Libraries.
For periodicals not listed in Josiah, consult
the staff at the Reference Desk or in the Serials Offices in either
the Rockefeller or Sciences Library. Arrangements can be made to
obtain copies of articles needed through Interlibrary Loan or to
provide letters of access to use materials at other libraries. You
may also use the Library's online
forms to request reference assistance or an Interlibrary Loan.
The Serials Office at the Rockefeller Library is located adjacent
to the Periodicals Reading Room on Level 1. The office is staffed
until 5:00 PM during the week. The staff can assist with any periodical
or microform related questions. The Serials Office at the Sciences
Library is located on Level 3. Ask at the Library Service Desk for directions.
The office is open and staffed weekdays until 5 p.m. On evenings
and weekends, request assistance from the Library Service Desk on Level A.
