The Rise and Fall of Tin Pan Alley
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Focusing on the decades between the 1880's
and the 1950's, this course examines social, musical and commercial forces behind
the emergence and decline of Tin Pan Alley as well as changes in the substance,
treatment, and significance of its songs during their years of popularity. Topics
addressed include national identity and race relations as well as the difficulties
of analyzing popular music.
