Computer file available on single workstation at the Rockefeller Reference area


Description of Database: The ICONCLASS system contains approximately 24,000 definitions of objects, persons, events, situations and abstract ideas. With these definitions one can 'describe' the subjects of visual images. 13,000 unique keywords help to locate the notations needed for describing or indexing a picture. The Bibliography contains some 40,000 references to books and articles of iconographical and cultural historical interest.

Sources: Primary sources, iconographic handbooks, exhibition catalogs, monographs, and articles in the field of cultural history and art history in general and iconography in particular.

Update Schedule: Irregular

Content Type: 40,000 bibliographic citations; also a decimal classification of iconography indexed by 13,000 keywords.
