About the Exhibition
online exhibit is based on an exhibition mounted in the John Hay
Library, Brown University. The exhibit opened on May 27, 2005 and
extends throughout the summer of 2005. The exhibit complemented a
Brown Commencement Forum, the first Wilmeth Lecture in American Theatre.
On May 28, 2005, Lawrence Maslon, Brown '81, associate arts professor
at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and coauthor
of Broadway: The American Musical lectured on a century
of change in the Broadway musical from the crossover revues of Ziegfeld
to the financial juggernauts that bring the sound of Broadway around the
The exhibit was curated and mounted by Rosemary L. Cullen, Senior Scholarly
Resources Librarian at the John Hay Library, who is also primarily
responsible for the online exhibit. Many thanks to Ann Patrick, Ann
Dodge, Alison Bundy, Pat Sirois, Patrick Yott, Ann Caldwell, Robin
Rao, Yvonne Federowicz, Tom Dean, and Dan Grollman. Most particular
thanks to Madeleine MacQuillan for "doing the wall" and Ben Tyler for
his digital camera work.
The exhibition is drawn from many collections at the John Hay Library,
and reflects only a tiny portion of the related holdings of these collections.
They include the Harris Collection of American Poetry and Plays, the
Sheet Music Collection, the Starred Book Collection, the Manuscript
Collections, and the Robert J. Tierney Entertainment Memorabilia Collection.

The web site was produced in Dreamweaver 7.0 and mounted to the web
using ssh (TM) Secure Shell (TM). Images were created on a TTI Reflex
45ei camera or on an Epson Expression 1640XL Flatbed
Scanner and saved in tif format. For the web,
jpgs were created from the tif images using Adobe Photoshop 7.0.1.
Most images are at 600 dpi resolution; some are at 300 dpi resolution.
