Guidelines for Selection of No-Fee Web Resources for
Cataloging in Josiah
The purpose of cataloging no-fee Internet resources is to supplement the breadth
and depth of the existing collections and to improve the quality of services available
to the University community. Sites chosen for this form of access should meet the
following criteria:
Required:
- be available at no-fee and with no restrictions (no license, registration, passwords,
agreements to monitor usage, or printing costs)
- be authoritative and scholarly (most sites), chosen using common criteria of
selection such as scope, content, design, authority, source, reliability, and stability
of the site.
- support Brown curricular, research, and/or informational needs
- not be linked on the Electronic Resources Web as a fully-supported database
- not require special software on ERD workstations
Preferred:
- able to be linked directly to the resource at the point where it is most useful
- have a contact listed for problem-reporting by the selector and/or users
- provide both current and archived information, when possible
Selector Responsibilities:
- initial recommendations of resources based on selection guidelines
- regular, ongoing review and evaluation of selected resources for content and
organizational changes. The Library has purchased software that will automatically
check whether the links on Josiah are still active/accurate.
- deselection of sources when appropriate
