After the Storm

Photograph of one of the side gates of Brown University’s Van Wickle Gates, looking down College Street. The gates were built with a bequest from Augustus Stout Van Wickle, Class of 1876, and dedicated June 18, 1901. Although this side gate is open, the center gates remained closed except for two special occasions each year. They are opened inward to admit students at the beginning of the college year and on Commencement Day are opened outward to allow the graduation procession to pass through. Manning Chapel was built in 1834, thanks to the generosity of John Nicholas Brown and named for President Manning. The building was home to the University Library on the first floor and a chapel on the second. In 1878, the Library relocated to Robinson Hall. After 1894, religious services were moved to Sayles Hall until Manning Hall was rededicated at Manning Chapel in 1959. The photo also shows the adjacent University Hall. Carberry Caught at Christmas

From a photograph by Bruce Bigelow, Brown Vice President and Director of Admission 1945-54. Taken from his second floor office in University Hall. University Archives, John Hay Library. Josiah S. Carberry is a legend, if not yet a myth. That’s all right because we all know that a myth is as good as a mile. Carberry was born in an unlocked bulletin board on the first floor of University Hall in Brown University on January 24, 1929. This first notice gave him no title and assigned him to no department. He soon became a Professor in the field of Psychoceramics, or the study of cracked pots. 6 ¼ x 4 ½
