• You don't know HOW TO FIND MATERIAL in the Brown Libraries.

• What you want is NOT ON THE SHELF.
  • Ask Library staff to look for the material you want by submitting a SEARCH REQUEST at the Circulation Desk of the Library where the material is supposed to be located.
  
  
• What you want is CHECKED OUT.
  • Recall the book by going to the Circulation Desk in any Library, or calling 401-863-2165. Recalled books are due back within 14 days.
  • Try to borrow it from another library on the Virtual Catalog .
  
  
• What you want is ON ORDER or IN PROCESS.
  • Request rush processing of the material using the online form .
  • Try to borrow it from another library on the Virtual Catalog.

 

• What you want is missing or lost or "CLMS RETD".
  • Check the stacks. There's a chance it may be there.
  • Try to borrow it from another library on the Virtual Catalog or Interlibrary Loan Services.

You'd like to VISIT another nearby library.

• The Cooperating Libraries Automated Network (CLAN) includes nearly all public libraries in the state. Rhode island residents (including temporary residents) can obtain a CLAN card at the Providence Public Library by showing proof of a Rhode Island address, such as a telephone bill.
  
  
• The Consortium of Rhode Island Academic Libraries ( CRIARL) provides for Faculty borrowing privileges at member libraries.
  If you are a member of the Brown faculty and wish to borrow material from other CRIARL libraries, be sure to obtain a CRIARL identification card at the Rockefeller Library Circulation Office before visiting any of these libraries. Brown students are permitted on site use of the collections of the other CRIARL libraries; in some cases a letter of referral from a Brown reference librarian is required.

  Six of the CRIARL libraries share a single catalog, (HELIN). Other catalogs can be accessed from the CRIARL link above.
  
  

• The Library of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is available for onsite use by all Brown ID holders.
  Brown faculty members who wish to borrow material from RISD must first obtain a CRIARL card from the Rockefeller Library Circulation Office, as described above. Brown students need a letter of referral from the Rockefeller Library Circulation Office in order to borrow material from RISD.
  
  
• The Association of Rhode Island Health Science Libraries (AHRISL) includes both academic and hospital libraries.
  Please check with the Sciences reference staff (401-863-3333) or the individual library before visiting.
  
  
• The Library of Rhode Island (LORI) provides additional information about (and directions to) Rhode Island libraries and library services.
  
  
• Directions to selected libraries, from the Brown campus.
  
  
• The Boston Library Consortium (BLC) includes 14 major academic libraries in Massachusetts, the University of Connecticut and the University of New Hampshire.
  Brown students, faculty and staff who wish to borrow material from other BLC libraries should obtain a BLC identification card at the Rockefeller Library Circulation Office before visiting any of these libraries.
  The BLC user guide provides a link to the online catalog of each member library, as well as a link to the BLC union list of serials. The Virtual Catalog will eventually include all BLC members' catalogs in a single searchable interface.
  
  
• The Harvard University Libraries are not part of the Boston Library Consortium and, in general, are not open to the public; some require payment of a fee.  Brown Reference staff can provide you with more information, and, if appropriate, a letter of referral.
