Remains of a Medieval Italian AntiphonalLEAVES |
Order of the Leaves
The leaves are titled by their foliation according to the penciled numbers,
for ease of standard reference. It is clear now that this is not the original
order of the leaves in the manuscript, an order which theoretically could be
reconstructed through placement of the chants in their correct context of the
usual sections of medieval antiphonals. This order, though commonly separated
into the Temporale and Sanctorale, each beginning with the first Sunday in Advent,
varies widely between monastic practices. Another factor to take into account
are the rubricated Roman numerals in the top left-hand corner of each verso;
while these might be page numbers, they might also be identifying some other
aspect of the manuscript. Until more details arise of the rite and office of
the antiphonal from which these leaves were removed, they can be constructively
and conveniently left in the order of the pencilled numbers.
