Remains of a Medieval Italian AntiphonalTEXTUAL TRANSCRIPTION |
Methods for Text Identification
In order to identify the purpose of each chant, I utilized an array of web-based
databases designed to make all the information contained in antiphonals searchable.
In the procedure I developed for finding the complete original to fragmented
chants, I began with the Cantus
Planus website, based in Regensburg, Germany. By downloading the comprehensive
text files of René-Jean Hespert's Corpus Antiphonalium Officii,
I could search for random Latin words and place the incomplete chants within
their full correct antiphon. Once I had the incipits to the antiphons or responsories,
and the correct expansions of the abbreviations, then two other websites came
into use: The University of Western Ontario's CANTUS:
A Database for Ecclesiastical Chant and La Trobe University Library's
Medieval
Music Database. Between the two search engines, I was able to locate
most chants within the corpus of medieval liturgical chants and accurately place
them to a feastday, service, and specific purpose. By comparing how incipits
were notated in the 131-column file notations of the siglums databased by CANTUS,
to the signal rubrications of the leaves themselves, I was able to reconstruct
how many texts worked in relation to surrounding, more ambiguous incipits. Then
using the Temporale and Sanctorale tables with their matching "liturgical
occasion codes" I was able to assign a chronology to the texts. These results
have been presented in relation to the transcription to give a general framework
of how these eighteen fragments once existed in relation to their original,
massive codex.
Guide to Textual Transcription
In the left column is an expanded transcription of each leaf, numbered by the
pencil numbers, which are written in the bottom right hand corner of the leaf
and are of a much later date than the MS. In very few cases have the expansions
of abbreviations not been included - only when the original word is still unknown.
While the regularly occurring "Mag" has been expanded to Magnificat,
the "in saecula saeculorum" has been retained as Scl'or'am for spatial
efficiency. Most other rubrications, except for "amen" and "nocturn,"
have been left abbreviated. The following clarifies the rules employed for this
transcription:
Expanded abbreviations: italics
Unexpanded abbreviations: apostrophe: scl'or'am
Ends of manuscript lines: slanted line: /
Rubrics: {Rubricated text}
Punctuation and Capitalization: Same as manuscript
Litterae Notabiliores: Bolded Initials
Illuminated Initials: Large Bolded Initials
In the right column is a reference for the function of the chants on each leaf.
At least one main responsory or antiphon has been identified with its correct
use in the Temporale or Sanctorale, and the entirety of the text has been provided,
with square [brackets] indicating text not contained on the leaf. Psalm incipits
and other phrases that were not crucial to identification of the day, or simply
unknown, are not referred to in this column - only positively identifiable antiphons
or responsories. In this way the leaf can be connected to its use in the liturgy,
even though some chants have not been identified yet.
