Peter Baumgras
Portrait of Abraham Lincoln
Oil on canvas. Washington: Spring, 1865.

Shortly after Lincoln's second inauguration, Baumgras began to paint this portrait from memory and from photographs, and he finished it soon after Lincoln's assassination.  In 1867, Baumgras sold the painting to Henry Hamilton of New York for $75, and it remained in the Hamilton family until 1931, when it was purchased for Brown.

McLellan Lincoln Collection.  Gift of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Class of 1897.
