This page is meant to help users of the NEW Library web learn how to quickly navigate the system. You will learn about the options available to you, and where the icons are that will help you to move around in the NEW Library web.
** NOTE: None of the following
images are interactive. Open the Library Home page in a second window
to explore the options indicated below.
In
the center of the page, you see a list of nine major categories.
Catalogs, e-resources, collections, etc. If you click your mouse
on one of these words, you will be taken to a page that focuses on the
topic identified. (see image at left)
You
will notice that when you move your mouse over these nine categories, another
list of items is automatically pulled up (see image at right). In
this example, when your mouse is over the word "libraries", a list of the
libraries appears to the LEFT of the main list. Notice that "libraries"
is also highlighted so you know which category you are working with.
The new list at the left of the main categories is also hyper linked to
a page associated with the topic indicated. So if you click on "john
d. rockefeller, jr" you will be taken to the "john d. rockefeller,
jr library" web page.
Go back to the home page and give this a try. HOME |
Now,
let's go to the TOP RIGHT corner of the Home page. Here you will see
seven yellow icons. Each icon is linked to a special page.
If you place your mouse over one of the yellow icons, you will see what
it is linked to. |
In
the image to the right, when the mouse is placed over the first icon, we
see that the words "search catalog (JOSIAH)" appears. You also see
a darker block that indicates which icon the words are associated with.
If you click on the first icon, you will be taken to JOSIAH, the online
catalog.
Move your mouse over the
icons and you will see that you can get to the following pages.
|
Let's
continue looking at what else is available from the Home page. BELOW
the seven icons mentioned above, you will see a form (see image at left).
As you can see from the writing above the form, this form allows you to
do a "josiah quick search". The TOP box is a drop down menu of the
different fields you can search in JOSIAH. Click anywhere in the
TOP box and the menu will drop down. Click once on your selection
of title, author, subject, etc. Once you have the field selected,
click in the box below the menu (and above the "search" button).
Here you can type the title that you are looking for, or the name of the
author (last name, first name). You can hit your "ENTER" button to
do your search, or hit the "search" button.
|
You
still see yet another form BELOW the "josiah quick search form".
As you can see, it is labeled "quick links" (see image at left).
This form is a drop down menu of ALL the Library web pages that you can
get to only directly from the Home page. This list is a subset of
the "a to z" page mentioned above.
When
you click in the drop down menu, a list of links appears (see image at
right). As you move your mouse down the list, your selection will
be highlighted. In this example, the "a to z site map"
is highlighted. You can also scroll down the list to see other options.
When you click on your selection, you will be automatically taken to the
page. This list makes it possible for you to quickly identify many
different pages. Go back to the Home page and give the "quick links"
list a try. HOME |
Now that you know how to
navigate from the Home page, let's
take a look at how to navigate
from a lower level page. Select
a link on the Home page,
preferably one of the nine main
catagory pages. Note
that the navigation among the lower level
pages will be the same.
The
first thing you will see is that part of the navigation is similar to what
you saw on the Home page. At the TOP RIGHT, you see the yellow icons
again. Only now there are only six of them (see image at left).
These icons will take you to the same pages that the icons on the Home
page will. You will notice that the "what's new" icon is no
longer available on the lower level pages. To review more on how
to use these icons, go back up the page to when we discussed the icons
on the Home page. (to review above)
Move your mouse over the
icons and you will see that you can get to the following pages.
|
At
the LEFT side of the lower level pages, you will also see some more (9)
yellow boxes with triangles in them (see image at left). These are
for navigation purposes also. Do you remember that there were nine
major categories listed on the Home page? Each of these represents
a link to each of those major category pages, and they are in the same
order as on the Home page.
When
you move your mouse over one of the boxes, you will see the name of the
major category that it is linked to. In the example (see image at
right), when the mouse is placed over the top box, the name "catalogs"
appears directly above it. If you moved your mouse down one box,
then you would see "e-resources" appear in the same location as "catalogs"
did. You can continue down the line of boxes. If you click
on one of the boxes, then you will be taken to the page dealing with the
category that was displayed.
This navigation will let you get to any of the major category pages from any other page. |
Now
that you can get to those other pages, what about getting back to the Home
page? At the TOP LEFT part of the page, you will see very boldly
the phrase "brown university library", and right below that, the URL for
the Library's Home page (see image at left). If you move your mouse
over the URL, you will see that it turns from white to yellow. If
you click on the URL, you will be taken back to the Home page. |
Lastly, you will also see an option on all the pages to go to the "low graphics version". This is a primarily text based version of many of the library pages.
We hope that this information has proven beneficial and that you find navigating the new library web much easier.
Thank you.
