The Friends of the Library are selling chunks of white marble from the old steps of the John Hay Library. The marble treads, worn down by more than eight decades of student and faculty footsteps, were replaced last Fall.
If you have fond memories of the Hay, here is a chance to own a unique souvenir. For $10, you can buy a chunk of the marble and benefit the Friends of the Library. The pieces range in size from roughly 2 inches by 3 inches to 4 inches by 10 inches. Most are irregularly shaped, and colors vary from white to gray and white to verdigris, the result of water dripping off the bronze lanterns flanking the doorway. A chunk may serve as anything from a paperweight to a stepping stone in your garden.
Each piece comes with a certificate of authenticity, stating that it was quarried in Dorset, Vermont, and once formed a part of the original steps of the John Hay Library. Contact the Friend's Office in the Hay at x1518 to make your choice.
