The Library is pleased to report that substantial progress has been made on the implementation of three additional Josiah modules. As many faculty and students are aware, the Josiah Course Reserve module was implemented in September, 1995 for all materials placed on course reserve in the Rockefeller, Sciences and Orwig Libraries. On the Josiah main menu there is now an option "R > Reserve Lists," which allows searching for course reserve material by the professor or teaching assistant's name and by course number. If an item on reserve is checked out, then Josiah will also display the date/time when the item is due. Reserve items which are part of the Library's cataloged collections (materials other than photocopies, reprints, and instructor's personal copies) are also searchable through the regular Josiah menus. Reaction to the course reserve module has been extremely positive, especially from the students who can now verify the status of titles on course reserve before coming to the library.
The Josiah Acquisitions Subsystem is another module which is now fully implemented. Beginning in July, 1995, the staff in the Acquisitions and Serials Departments began using Josiah to generate the purchase orders for all newly ordered library materials. A bibliographic record is being created for every title at the time that it is ordered. The bibliographic records are searchable through the Josiah menus, although the degree of completeness of the records will vary. All of the records will generally include author and title; some may also include subjects and other access points.
If an item on order is not yet fully cataloged, the status box will indicate one of the following:
If you find a Josiah item with any of these messages, you may complete a form at any Reference Desk to request the item. Items which are on hand will be processed within two to three working days, and you will be notified by mail to pick up the item at the Circulation Desk of the appropriate library.
The Josiah Serials Checkin Subsystem is the third module being implemented, but unlike Course Reserves and Acquisitions, the implementation of Serials is just beginning. The Serials Subsystem is basically a module which enables library staff to record the receipt of current periodical issues. Beginning in early 1996, the staff in the Serials units of the Rockefeller and Sciences Libraries will begin phasing out the manual checkin cards for periodical titles and will begin entering the receipt information directly into Josiah. As soon as the information is entered into Josiah, it will be displayed to library users. Below is an example of a typical Josiah periodical screen for a title using the new module.

With the initiation of Serials Checkin, all of the basic Josiah modules will have been implemented at Brown. However, further enhancements of Josiah are planned as part of the adoption of the newest release of the Josiah software, which was installed in November, 1995. Announcements about these changes will be made as soon as they are accomplished. - H.P.
