ANNOUNCEMENTS: The largest and most important gathering of George Orwell material in private hands has been given to the John Hay Library by Daniel J. Leab. Consisting primarily of printed works by and about Orwell, the Leab Collection contains first and subsequent editions of all of his books, from Down and Out in Paris and London, his first, to 1984, his last. In addition, the Leab Collection includes a small, select group of manuscripts, as well as books owned by the author, including school books signed Eric Blair, his birth name, and a considerable body of ephemeral material. The collection, a major source for the study of Orwell itself, complements the manuscript of 1984, given to the Library several years ago by Daniel G. Siegel, '57. Bibliographic access to the material is now available via Josiah, thanks to a gift from Lyman G. Bloomingdale, '38. Several years ago, for the second time, Mr. Bloomingdale had given the Library a major collection of the works of John Buchan and provided funds for its cataloging. Because the task was completed ahead of schedule, the remaining money was used to catalog the Leab Collection.
