Is it Mao Tse-tung or Mao Zedong? Starting October 1, libraries
across the country, including Brownâs, began using Pinyin as the
standard romanization scheme for Chinese characters, replacing the
previously used Wade Giles system. Names such as Lao-tzu will now
appear as Laozi; Peking or Pei-ching becomes Beijing. This project
will necessitate changing millions of older cataloging records in
the national and local databases. Until the conversion has been
completed, we will have a mixture of both romanization schemes.
Therefore, during this interim period, you may have to search under
both the Pinyin and Wade Giles forms of Chinese names in order to
find everything you want.
