What's new in JOSIAH | Library Holdings | Library Locations | JOSIAH Search Tips 

JOSIAH, the Brown University Library Online Catalog, provides bibliographic information, locations and call numbers, and circulation and on-order status of library materials. Course reserve lists are also included. Josiah is available in a telnet or a web version.  

JOSIAH is named in honor of
Professor Josiah S. Carberry who has and has not been Professor of Psychoceramics (the study of cracked pots) since 1929.


Library Holdings in JOSIAH
JOSIAH contains bibliographic information, locations, and call numbers about some 1.6 million items cataloged by the Brown University Library.

Approximately 98 percent of the following items will be found in JOSIAH:

  • books

  • journal and serial titles

  • music scores

  • sound recordings

  • audiovisuals (mainly videos)

  • Brown dissertations and theses.


The following items generally will not be found in JOSIAH or the holdings will be limited:

  • Government documents

  • maps

  • uncatalogued special collections

  • manuscripts

  • archives

  • broadsides 

  • sheet music

  • articles from journals


Library Locations:
Each item in JOSIAH includes a Library location and call number. From a list of items, select an individual item number, then copy or print the complete location and call number; all parts are needed to locate materials.

The first word in the location indicates the library and/or building name.

Josiah Search TIps:

Specific fields do very specific tasks.
  • A TITLE search searches the title as an exact phrase. Type all of the title or the first words of the title.

    Examples:
         gone with the wind
         journal of social psychology
         history of americ
         science
    If you are not sure of the exact title, try using the WORDS FROM TITLES AND SUBJECTS search.

  • WORDS FROM TITLES AND SUBJECTS search. This option allows you to search any  words in  any order. Type distinctive words from a title or subject heading. For word variations, use the truncation symbol: *  To broaden a search, use or; to narrow a search use no

    Examples:
         here eternity
         native drama
         ecolog*
         ceylon or sri lanka
         pascal no computer

  •  If you are sure that what you want is a Journal or a Serial, then use the JOURNAL AND SERIAL TITLES option. Type all of the title or the first words of the title. If you do not find the title try using the TITLE or the WORDS FROM TITLES AND SUBJECTS search.

  • SUBJECT HEADINGS Type some or all of the subject heading for items about a topic, place, person, or organization. This search uses terms from the Library of Congress Subject Headings list.

    Examples:
         enzymes
         china--foreign relations
         baldwin james
         ford foundation
    If you are unsure of the exact subject heading, use the WORDS FROM TITLES AND SUBJECTS search
