Selected Library and Internet Resources for French Studies

  • Boston Library Consortium 
    Brown's membership in the Boston Library Consortium (BLC) provides Brown students and faculty with access and borrowing privileges at the libraries of Boston College, Boston University, Brandeis, MIT, Northeastern, the University of Massachusetts (all campuses) and the other members of the BLC. See Use of the BLC Libraries. A virtual catalog to be implemented over the next three years will allow  users to search all of the BLC library catalogs simultaneously and make a direct online request for materials to be delivered to Brown.

  • Worldcat. Over 4 million bibliographic records catalog contributed by libraries around the world.  Copy and paste records into an online ILL request form.

  • Brown is a member of the Center for Research Libraries, which "operates a global cooperative collection development program that assists academic and research libraries in making otherwise inaccessible and important research materials permanently available to scholars and researchers."  CRL has strong holdings in foreign newspapers and dissertations, and sponsors  the Cooperative Africana Microform Project (CAMP), "a joint effort by research libraries throughout the world and the Center for Research Libraries (CRL) to promote the preservation of publications and archives concerning the nearly fifty nations of Sub-Saharan Africa and to make these materials in microform available to researchers."  An extensive collection of French documents, political pamphlets and newspapers offers primary resources that range from the 16th century to the 20th century.

    • Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon, this prestigious Library of the city of Lyons offers several databases on the history of the book, the history of printing and rare books
    • Catalogue collectif du Sudoc Système universitaire de documentation, a union catalog of 5,000 academic libraries maintained by the Agence bibliographique de l'enseignement supérieure (ABES). Includes monographs, periodicals, and dissertations.
    • Repositories of primary sources, "a listing of over 4700 websites describing holdings of manuscripts, archives, rare books, historical photographs, and other primary sources for the research scholar" maintained at the University of Idaho.
  • ARTbibliographies Modern
    1974-present; covers the artists and movements of the late 19th century up to the most recent works and trends of today. Includes abstracts of journal articles, books, essays, exhibition catalogs, dissertations, and exhibition reviews

  • Arts and Humanities Citation Index
    1988-present; source for information in all arts and humanities disciplines. Useful for retrieving recent articles that cite a known earlier article. Arts & Humanities Citation Index is a multidisciplinary database covering the journal literature of the arts and humanities. It indexes 1,144 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals, as well as covering individually selected, relevant items from over 6,800 major science and social science journals.

  • L'Atelier historique de la langue française CD-ROM of seven historical dictionaries. Available from Library workstations only

  • Concordance de l'Occitan Médiéval (COM) CD-ROM of texts in Occitan from the first attestation to those belonging to the end of the fifteenth century. Available from Rockefeller Library workstations only

  • Digital Dissertations (Dissertation Abstracts)1861-present; covers every doctoral dissertation completed at accredited institutions in the U.S. This NEW version of Dissertation Abstracts includes 24-page thumbnails of every dissertation since 1997, as well as the full text of all Brown University dissertations since 1997.

  • Ethnic News Watch
    Current; a full-text comprehensive collection of the newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic and minority press.

  • FRANCIS
    1984 to present; through an international perspective, FRANCIS provides citations and abstracts to interdisciplinary materials for the humanities and social sciences. Topics include: art, psychology, information science, archaeology, ethnology, geography, business management, history of science and technology, history and science of religion, linguistics, literature, philosophy, prehistory and protohistory, sociology, education and more. Citations include journal articles, conference papers, books, reports, and doctoral dissertations. A continuation of the former publication of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, sections of the Bullletin signalétique are available in print at:   ROCK 1-SIZE Z7125 .F7

  • Historical Abstracts
    1977-present; article abstracts and citations of books and dissertations on the history of the world from 1450 to the present. Excludes the U.S. and Canada.

  • Index to Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) Reports
    1977-1996; covers English translations by the CIA of foreign broadcast and media reports. available from Library workstations only.

  • International Index to the Performing Arts Full Text (IIAPFT)
    1864 - present; draws its content from scholarly and popular performing arts periodicals, and also indexes a variety of documents such as biographical profiles, conference papers, obituaries, interviews, discographies, reviews and events. IPAFT covers nearly all aspects of the performing arts, from scholarly studies to snapshots of popular culture.

  • MLA Modern Language Association International Bibliography
    1963-present; multilingual index to books and journals in the fields of modern literature, languages, linguistics, and folklore.   (1921/25 - 1998 available in print:  ROCK 1-SIZE Z7006 .A31)

  • Ulrich's International Periodical directory
    Ulrich's is a bibliographic database providing detailed, comprehensive, and authoritative information on serials published throughout the world. It covers all subjects, and can be useful in identifying where a specific journal may be indexed. 

  • World news connection (WNC)
    1994 to present; an online news service of translated and English-language news and information. From non-U.S. media sources, WNC covers socioeconomic, political, scientific, technical, and environmental issues and events within 24-72 hours of the original broadcast. Regional categories covered include Central Eurasia, China, East Asia, Near East & South Asia, East Europe, West Europe, The Americas, and Sub-Saharan Africa.

  • French Studies Web  Maintained by the Western European Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries, "the French Studies Web provides annotated links to scholarly web resources and also includes sites of particular interest to librarians specializing in Western Europe."

  • HAPAX: French resources on the Web  "An experimental server featuring links to French-related resources on the Web of interest to university-level teachers and students. This server is dedicated to the promotion of French world-wide [and]... maintained ... at Sweet Briar College in Virginia, USA."

  • Humbul Humanities Hub - French language & literature (Resource Discovery Network hosted by the University of Oxford)

  • Le Net des Etudes Françaises  Maintained at the University of Toronto, this site offers carefully selected resources and encourages discussions on various aspects of Francophone culture.

  • Renardus, "a collaborative project that aims to improve academic users' access to a range of existing Internet-based information services across Europe". Currently a pilot project, Renardus will serve as a gateway to resources "selected according to quality criteria and carefully described by Subject Gateways from several European countries."

  • Les Signets de la Bibliothèque Nationale de France Sites reviewed, selected and organised into four categories by the BnF (themes, Library catalogs, General sites, and Internet toolbox).

  • Histoire de France de Vercingétorix à nos jours proposes an overview of French history; chronology and images
  • VLIB Histoire  A rich site for historical resources selected and organized by a group of young researchers. Selection criteria are based on the research level and pedagogical value of the sites.
  • Dix neuf, ressources sur le dix-neuvième siècle, comprehensive site on the 19th century, maintained at the University of Bristol.
  • Le XIXème siècle (1815-1914) Hosted by the publisher Anovi and compiled by Marc Nadaux, this site focuses on the history of France from 1815 to 1914. The articles it offers provide a contextual framework to the time period, bibliographies, detailed chronologies, documents, a forum, a glossary, links, biographic information about important figures of the time period, and a search engine.
  • L'Histoire de France par l'image Designed for students, this site gives a history, through images, of France from 1789 to 1939. Images are searchable thematically (Economie et Société, Politique, et Culture), chronologically, or with a search engine. Each image is shown, analyzed, and interpreted. In French.
  • Image de France Binghamton University's George D. McKee presents this database of images of France authorized for public distribution between 1811 and 1821. "[…] an index of all of the printed imagery (engravings, lithographs, woodcuts, etc.) authorized for publication in France, pursuant to legislation of 5 February 1810, 14 October 1811, 8 October 1817, etc.
  • Pamphlets and periodicals of the French Revolution of 1848 Pamphlets and periodicals of the French Revolution of 1848 The 1848 Project is jointly administered by CRL (Center for Research Libraries), The University of Chicago, and ARTFL (American and French Research on the Treasury of the French Language). The 1848 collection houses more than 100 pamphlets and periodicals form 1848 to 1851. A search engine and a list of titles and call numbers are available.
  • Siege and Commune 1870-71 Northwestern University's Siege and Commune Collection's digitized image database is housed here. In addition to a search engine, visitors to this site may browse the master subject and title indexes, or browse the portrait, landscape/architecture, political caricatures, and documentation sections. In English.
  • History of Paris bibliography A very large bibliography compiled and edited by Philip Whalen, this site gives references for searchers interested in Paris and its history. A search engine is included.
