The
Francis Wayland Collegium for Liberal Learning was established in
1980 as a community of faculty united by a unique system of support
for inquiries focused on global and interdisciplinary perspectives
on significant issues of human life.
The Collegium's work proceeds in three closely related directions.
First, it sponsors monthly lunch talks
by faculty on their research, and a program of distinguished lectures
by well-known outside speakers. Second, it sponsors a substantial
program of grants for faculty study
groups and seminars.
Finally, it also promotes curricular innovations through a program
of course development grants, including
the newest initiative, Wayland
Fellowships, which subsidize three to five day residencies at
Brown. Presently, about 200 faculty who share these interests and
concerns are Fellows of the Collegium.
The Collegium is located in Rhode Island Hall, and interested faculty
members and students are encouraged to drop in to find out more
about its work.
