Total Methane Produced

Unit: Tons/ Year

Source:((Methane from Small Landfills x 0.0077)+(Methane from Large Landfills x 0.0077)) x (1.07)

The Workbook estimates that the total emissions from industrial waste is 7% of the municipal waste. This is added on by multiplying by 1.07.

Total Methane Flared

Unit: Tons of Methane per Year

Source: The data for methane flaring came from Table 5, and the RIDEM. There is not complete data of the flaring that is done each year by landfills other than Central in Rhode Island. The total for all other landfills was estimated to be 919 tons/year. This value is an estimate provided by RIDEM. The data that was provided was in SCFM of landfill gas generated, it was assumed that they captured 85% of this gas.

The values where converted from SCFM of landfill gas, to Tons of Methane per Year.

This was done by multiplying the Landfill Gas in SCFM by 53% to get the amount of methane in the gas. Then by 0.04243 to convert it from cubic feet per minute to pounds per minute. This was then converted to tons per year to give the value used in the table.

Adjustment for Flaring

Unit: Tons of Methane

Source: Total Methane Produced - Total Methane Flared

Adjustment for Oxidation

Unit: Tons of Methane

Source: Adjustment for Flaring x 0.90

The value 0.90 is the percentage of methane which is not oxidized in the soil, this value comes from the Workbook

Total Emissions

Unit: MTCE

Source: Adjustment for Oxidation x 21 x 0.907 x 12/44
