Rhode Island Greenhouse Gas
Inventory
:Study Guide

| Question #2:
Blowin' in the Wind |
Switch on a lamp in your home. Light spills
out into the room. But where does the electricity come from that powers
your lamp, your computer, or your refridgerator?
As stated in the Inventory, in 1996
the fossil fuel emissions from the Residential Sector were
697,861 MTCE (metric tons carbon equivalent), the third largest
emissions in this category after Transportation and Electric
Utility.
Given these large emissions, how might Rhode
Island residents find ways to reduce the impact of their energy
use? One way would be to cut down on our actual energy use - for
some idea how, click
here. Another answer, as Bob
Dylan said, is blowin' in the wind - wind power that is.
a) Where does your family receive its
power from? b) Why is wind power a preferable energy source in terms of
greenhouse gas emissions? c) What would happen if
5% of Rhode Island residents who were using Distillate Oil as a source switched to wind
power to produce their electricity? Calculate out the reductions, in
distillate produced energy consumed and in MTCE, if this occurred. (Assume
that this is 1995. Also assume that greenhouse gas emissions from wind
power are zero).
