The term "invasive" means different things to different people, so to be consistent, I'm going to tell you the definition created by the American Nursery and Landscape Association and the Weed Science Society of America and ask that you use it while you respond to my questions. I'd also like to hear what you think of the definition, so I will ask you your opinion of it at the end of the survey. This is the definition:

"Invasive plants are plants that have or are likely to (1) spread into native plant communities and cause environmental harm by developing self-sustaining populations and disrupting those systems; or, (2) spread into managed plant systems and cause economic harm."

Please keep it in mind as you respond to the rest of my questions.

I am very interested in knowing what you think about the definition of "invasive plants" that I presented before.  Here it is again.

"Invasive plants are plants that have or are likely to (1) spread into native plant communities and cause environmental harm by developing self-sustaining populations and disrupting those systems; or, (2) spread into managed plant systems and cause economic harm."

Thank you for taking the time to fill out this survey! Your responses will be an important contribution to the debate as the industry decides how to deal with invasive plants in the future.

Subject: Invasive plants: a survey for nurseries

Hi, my name is Meredith Hall. I'm an undergraduate at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island studying the United States' policies on invasive plants for my senior thesis. One of the important points of view is that of the nursery industry. I plan on passing the information that I hope to collect from you to industry groups so that they may be better equipped in exploring options to manage this sensitive issue. All information you provide will be kept confidential.

To respond, please reply to this email (to ---@Brown.edu). Or print out this survey, fill it out by hand, and send it to

Please indicate your multiple choice answers with a capital X in the space to the left of your selections and type out your responses in all capitals. To help me out with my academic deadlines, PLEASE RESPOND BY FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2000.

Second introduction – sent on March 6, 2000

Hi! Maybe you remember receiving an email survey from me about invasive plants in January? I'm sending it out again in case you might have a chance to fill it out for me now. I'd love to hear from you - the more nursery and landscape professionals that tell me how they feel about invasive plants, the better suggestions I can make to ANLA. If you're a state nursery association, I'd be grateful if you were to email this survey on to your members.

If you've got the time, please send me your response by March 22, 2000.

Thanks! Meredith Hall
