Livable Providence 2000

An Urban Environmental Conference

INTRODUCTION

The Livable Providence 2000 Urban Environmental Conference was convened on October 23, 1999 at the Providence Campus of the Community College of Rhode Island. The conference was designed to generate input to the process creating the first urban environmental plan for the city of Providence. The overarching goal, as stated by Mayor Vincent A. Cianci, Jr., is to "ensure that all Providence neighborhoods are safe, healthy and pleasant places to live."

The conference brought together approximately 90 individuals from civic, governmental and educational entities in the city of Providence to discuss a range of issues affecting livability and the urban environment of Providence, Rhode Island. In light of the scope of recent and proposed developments to both downtown Providence and other sections of the city, to not incorporate environmental concerns into any master plan of development would be negligent. This conference was convened as a step toward creating Providence's first environmental action plan.
