Graduate students Twelve graduate student opportunities are funded through the NSF IGERT grant. Students accepted to the program receive multi-year support packages covering the cost of tuition and the graduate stipend. The NSF grant covers part of the tuition and the University shares the cost. Graduate students apply to, and are admitted to, one of the participating departments. Each graduate student has a supervisory committee of three members, with representation from at least two of the participating departments, including a primary advisor from his or her home department. The committee: Assists the student in formulating a program of study. (Click here to read about three hypothetical students and their programs of study.) Supervises a 1st- or 2nd-year research project, which introduces a student to interdisciplinary research. Serves as readers of the student's preliminary paper or thesis proposal, completed in the 3rd year. Supervises the Ph.D. thesis. In addition to coursework and research, graduate students receive teacher training. They also participate in seminars, which address research that crosses departmental boundaries, and retreats. Retreats serve both as a forum for faculty to present examples of recent or ongoing research, and as a forum to acquaint new graduate students with faculty from other departments. Such individualized, focused training effectively accommodates students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles
Two postdoctoral fellowships with stipends are awarded annually and are renewable up to three years. Fellowships are awarded to those who have displayed significant interest, promise, and ability in conducting collaborative interdisciplinary research. Postdocs contribute to graduate education by teaching collaborative interdisciplinary courses and demonstrating their research. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Psychology, Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a related discipline, or show evidence that the Ph.D. will be completed before the start of the position. Salaries are competitive. Like all NSF-funded programs, this opportunity is available only to American citizens and permanent residents. Brown University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. Research associate opportunities are also available for undergraduates interested in performing research with experts in the field. Interested undergraduates should contact individual CMM faculty members. |
